Doom metal has always been around but never had its days of glory, safely staying in the underground. A nice looking package from Israel’s Total Rust Music, Asymmetry brings us 74 minutes of slow doom music from all over the world. Some bands are quite well known in doom circles, some are promising newcomers and some are just showing potential.
The funeral procession is headed by Lux Incerta (Italy), which plays standard, dreamy Gothic doom with a few double bass drum passages. The lyrics are passionately sung both in English and French and the only real minus is a cardboard-box drum sound.
With “A State of Decay,” Whelm (Denmark) have turned the riff from “Black Sabbath” into a monolithic post-hardcore drone, adding eerie keyboards, discordant shapes, and very long pauses. The song dissolves into disharmony before being assembled again. One of the better tracks here.
Remembrance (France) play depressive, romantic doom death. Slow piano, distant screams and whispers appear and disappear, and guitar harmonies make “Beyond the Waters” sound like My Dying Bride, but stripped of everything except the atmosphere.
While Mary Bell (Netherlands) sound like a simpler version of Whelm, Asofy (Italy) make one of the highlights of this CD with “Luce.” It instantly drags the listener into a dismal, cold, secluded place. Clean, icy guitars and carefully placed drums sound like crystal shards falling, tortured whispers are wandering around and the experience slowly builds up into a real song before it fades away and dies. Excellent.
The Knell (Israel) play standard death doom with clean parts and death grunts. Some parts of “Into Shattered” suspiciously sound like a slowed-down happier song and it ends with a blast. Curious.
Chilean doomsters Mar De Grises are the biggest surprise on the CD. Even with drawbacks such as thin guitar sound and badly triggered drums, they manage to create a wall of sound. The same-titled song is a 10-minute journey through dismal landscapes, moods, dynamics and varying degrees of dispair.
Saturnus (Denmark) are just average in comparison, in spite of the superbly named guitarist Peter Pain. “Murky Waters” is a mid-tempo rock song with hardcore vocals and doomy clean parts.
Wreck of Hesperus (Ireland) sound a bit scary but it’s because “Utter Rot” has probably been recorded with only a couple of microphones in a garage. The song itself is a drone of calculated, slow, sludge riffs and sick screams.
Abysmal Darkening (The Netherlands) bring the proceedings to an appropriate ending with “End It.” It’s average blackened doom with unconvincing riffs, but what the singer does on it can only be described as dying in agony. Poor guy.
Asymmetry is a themed compilation and there is a thread joining all the songs into a pleasant sonic journey. For anyone wanting to give slow music a chance, it’s not a bad start. For those who are already into doom, it will bring a couple of surprises. It has been printed in only 750 copies in 2005, but if the fans are as slow as the music, there should still be some left. La neonata etichetta Totalrust (da Gerusalemme, posto sicuramente fuori dall’ordinario per il genere proposto) mette subito le cose in chiaro pubblicando una compilation dedicata agli amanti di sonorità lente e opprimenti; come in tutte le compilation ci sono cose buone e altre meno buone, a scanso di equivoci metto qui sotto il voto a ogni brano in maniera da essere più chiaro.
Ovviamente tale voto va preso come un giudizio sul pezzo e non sulla band, in quanto giudicare un gruppo per una canzone sarebbe alquanto limitante e errato; bando alle ciance e partiamo con le votazioni!
LUX INCERTA – doom classico di maniera a volte troppo mieloso; rimandati. voto: 6
WHELM – doom death come mamma Peaceville amava; promette molto bene, da tenere d’occhio. voto: 7
REMEMBRANCE – funeral utile come un preservativo usato o i full lenght di My SHameful voto: 2

WRECK OF THE HESPERUS – dall’irlanda con furore. Ottima rivelazione (vedi pure il demo ‘Terminal Dirge’); peccato per la registrazione ‘garage’, altrimenti il voto sarebbe stato ‘sticazzi’. voto: 8
ABYSMAL DARKENING – dal Paese di Gullit, Van Basten e Crujif un gruppo doom che cerca identità e stile. non male il pezzo ma ancora un pò acerbo (e pure il nome è un pò banalotto, eh). voto: 6,5

Total Rust ist der Name eines neuen israelischen Labels, das als Einstieg direkt mal einen prall gefüllten Doom-Sampler auf den Markt bringt. Auf “Asymmetry” hat man zehn internationale Underground-Bands zusammengeschart, die sich ausschließlich den verschiedenen Spielarten der langsamen Musik gewidmet haben. Die Spanne der vertretenen Bands reicht daher auch von der Todesblei-Spielart bis hin zum Epic Doom, wobei zunächst mal keine qualitativen Unterschiede zu erkennen sind. Lediglich der Sound gibt einem zu Denken, denn ähnlich wie bei diversen Heftbeilagen schwankt dieser von Song zu Song doch beachtlich.
Während die chilenischen Götter von MAR DE GRISES in ihrer melodischen und absolut genialen Bandhymne ‘Mar De Grises’ noch einen glasklaren und druckvollen Sound vorweisen können, nervt einen der raue Garagensound der irischen Sludge-Formation WRECK OF HESPERUS schon gewaltig, zumal ihr Beitrag ‘Utter Rot’ für mich auch die einzige Komposition auf “Asymmetry” ist, die mir nicht auf Anhieb zugesagt hat. MARY BELL aus den Niederlanden zum Beispiel sind da auf ähnlichen Fährten unterwegs, können aber mit ihrem hasserfüllten Sludge-Sound in ‘Armageddon Jam’ sofort punkten. Fett, fies und dreckig – so geht das, und so machen die Holländer es auch. Beide Daumen hoch. In eine ähnliche Kerbe schlagen auch WHELM aus Dänemark, die ihre Musik als Post Hardcore anpreisen und tatsächlich auch irgendwo in der Nähe von NEUROSIS musizieren. Das Resultat ist eine qualvolle Orgie namens ‘A State Of Decay’, die definitiv zu den Highlights dieser stark besetzten Compilation gehört.
Weiterhin vertreten sind auch noch einige ruppige Death-Metal-Bands in Form von THE KNELL und ABYSMAL DARKENING. Erstere fallen vor allem durch den dicken Groove auf und passen wegen der teilweise auftretenden, voranpreschenden Riffattacken nicht so ganz in das Schema dieses Samplers, können aber mit ihrem starken Beitrag ‘Into Shattered’ dennoch überzeugen. Außerdem ist dies die einzige Band aus Israel, die hier vertreten ist, so dass man hier auch von einem gelungenen Heimspiel sprechen darf. Die andere Band stammt aus Holland und hat in ‘End It’ einen ziemlich fiesen Mix aus Death und Dark Metal kreiert, der ebenfalls sehr gut gefällt.
Übrig bleiben schließlich noch die etwas epischeren Vertreter dieser Musik, namentlich LUX INCERTA und die labeleigene Formation REMEMBRANCE, beide aus Frankreich, die – ich weiß nicht, ob es jetzt auch an der speziellen Spielart liegt – für mich die beiden besten Songs zu diesem Sampler beisteuern. Vor allem LUX INCERTA überzeugen mit einer tollen Atmosphäre und erhabenen Melodien.
Nicht vergessen möchte ich am Ende die bereits etwas bekannteren SATURNUS aus Dänemark, die trotz eines guten Stückes nicht so richtig auffallen wollen, und ASOFY aus Italien, deren entspannter Sound in der Mitte der CD nach all den schwermütigen Nummern sehr willkommen ist.
In der Endabrechnung bleibt somit auch stehen, dass diese erste Veröffentlichung von Total Rust Records in jeglicher Hinsicht sehr lohnenswert ist. Mit einer Spielzeit von 74 Minuten bekommt der Hörer ein sehr sattes Paket, und da der Inhalt durchweg überzeugen kann, ist eigentlich auch schon klar, dass sich jeder Doom-Jünger auf http://www.totalrust-music.com/ zumindest mal ein Bild von der hier vertretenen Musik machen sollte. Dort kann man “Asymmetry” dann auch ordern und sich mit einigen Perlen des Doom-Undergrounds vertraut machen. Sicher keine schlechte Idee … (by Björn Backes)

This is the first Total Rust Music release, I already reviewed their first real album-release some time ago, which was The Wraith Of The Ropes album named “Ada”, a nice start for a label. This very first release is a compilation CD filled with all kinds of doom bands taken from all over the world. This review is a quick look into all the bands of the compilation?
The first band on this compilation CD is the French Lux Incerta and plays a rather traditional kind of melodic and slightly romantic doom death metal in the vein of mid-nineties My Dying Bride, Mourning Beloveth and Swallow The Sun for instance. Maybe a bit like their fellow-country men Inborn Suffering and Dutch Eria d’Or. At least nothing really thrilling in terms of renewals or whatever, but played with enough flair to get a place in the sub-top of the (ever expanding) French doom scene.
Besides Saturnus (later on in this review) we’ll find another Danish doom band called Whelm. A deep gurgling funeral doom band that released their demo in 2004 but never reached my ears yet. Without sounding really original the band knows how to attract the attention for the full nine minutes of the track. But it is actually that lacking of any originality that makes the band maybe less interesting than some other bands in the genre. Still I would like to hear a full-length by these Danish doomsters, hopefully they’ll work on it soon.
The third band of this compilation is a French band that I remarkably never heard of called Remembrance. Led by a girl, something even more special. Carline van Roos is the main composer of this band if I’m not mistaken and takes care of the keyboards, guitars, vocals and drumprogramming. I hope that the vocals I hear were done by her soulmate in Remembrance Matthieu Sachs (guitars, bass and vocals) as they doesn’t sound so very female to me. Anyway, the music is long drawn yet rather melodic doom metal in the vein of Pantheist, Until Death Overtakes Me, Mar De Grises, Swallow The Sun, Shape Of Despair and Tyranny. In just over five minutes this two-piece definitely know how to impress me with their keyboard driven slow doom. I really hope to track down some of their full releases. It’s great to see that France is getting out of its undersnowed position and produces some of the finest doom from the last few years! The surprise of this compilation for sure?
Mary Bell is a Dutch band that I never heard of either, which is a bit strange to say the least, as Holland isn’t that big. The band throw it a bit over the filthy kind of doom with Mistress-alike vocals, so you’d better place this band besides the revolting kind of sludge doom bands, in the vein of Mistress and a randomly taken slow sludge band from the CodeBreaker label and add a bit of that Wreck Of The Hesperus and Sourvein kind of thing and you’ll come rather close to what Mary Bell sounds like. I would be interested in hearing something of their own and see a live set, so I’ll keep my eyes open for them.
Next up is the Italian band Asofy. Unknown to me as well, and actually not too bad either. There are not many doom bands worth mentioning from the land of the sun and the nice women. I need to say that Asofy has got quite some things to get improved but the potential is certainly there. Their music can be described as gloomy and atmospheric doom with some weird sighing vocals which sounds like if the singer is actually dying or spilling his last breath.
The Knell is maybe the least interesting band of this compilation, mostly due to the rather dull sounding doom death compositions and the vocals who lack any feel of commitment. There are some nice ideas to be heard but mostly the song isn’t jus the right thing. Hopefully they’ll come up with something new soon, I’ll be open for a another try of course.
One of the better known bands of this compilation is definitely Mar De Grises from Chile which is presented with a track from their self-titled 2002 demo. I haven’t heard this demo before so this track was a very welcome introduction to it, rumours go that the demo will be re-released on a Dutch label soon. So, definitely worth to keep an eye on them for the coming months. Great band though this track is a little less well produced than their album is (obviously) so it might take you some more time to get into.
The next song is provided by Danish doom masters Saturnus, one of my all time favorite doom bands. I was very thrilled to hear a new track from the upcoming Saturnus album, which is to be released on Firebox Records somewhere this year. The track “Murky Waters” was also unofficially released on a demo from 2004 but it took two years to reach me, but it was truly worth waiting for this Saturnus on its best. I can’t wait for the album to come in!
A rather experimental band from Ireland: Wreck Of The Hesperus. They were on the Dutch Doom Day festival in 2005, and they kind of failed to impress me here, but the tracks I heard taken from various recording sessions were pretty interesting to hear, so is this “Utter Rot” with its ten minutes in playing time. Hopefully I will see them on stage somewhere soon again for a second round, for this raw and filthy bass-driven doom is something that I surely like!
Another Dutch band on this compilation got the honor to close it down: Abysmal Darkening from Tilburg with members from Bunkur, Planet Aids and Sauron for instance. Not very different from a band like Bunkur but with guitars and a little more variation. In the booklet I read that 5-KE (Kevin) plays the bass, but I was actually pretty sure that he was doing the vocals when I saw them perform their very first live-show when they opened up for Swallow The Sun and Before The Dawn. But I could’ve been mistaken as I was actually more interested in chatting around a bit. (by Felix Schoonen)

Jerusalems (!) eerste metallabel Total Rust Music gaat zich specialiseren in allerlei vormen van doom. De eerste release (Trust001) is een verzamel cd geworden met verschillende soorten ‘trage muziek’ gecomponeerd door Franse, Nederlandse, Deense, Italiaanse en Spaanse bands.
De dans wordt geopend door Lux Incerta met een slepend Whispering Gallery-achtig werkje. Funeral doom afgewisselend met Neurosis-achtige passages krijgen we van Whelm voorgeschoteld en Remembrance levert ons een soundscape af. Daarna gaan we door de krochten van de hel met Mary Bell om daarna romantisch te landen met Asofy. De daarna volgende bands bevinden zich tussen al deze eerder genoemde stijlen en enkel de slecht geproduceerde bijdrage van Wreck of the Hesperus valt wat tegen.
Van welke bands zul je binnenkort nog iets horen? Remembrance en The Knell brengen hun komende plaat uit op dit Israëlische label en ik zag toevallig ook dat Saturnus tekende bij het Finse Firebox Records. De overige bands zitten nog in de demofase en/of zoeken een platenfirma. Dit leuke verzamelwerkje is gelimiteerd tot 750 exemplaren en ziet er verzorgd uit. (by Kristof)

Total Rust Music aus Jerusalem/Israel (!), die kürzlich mit “Ada” von WRAITH OF THE ROPES ein großartiges Album auf den Markt geschmissen haben, präsentieren dem Hörer einen Querschnitt durch das Labelprogramm, welches wohl eher die Fans düsterer und zäher Klänge ansprechen wird. LUX INCERTA eröffnen mit “Clear Water” eher gothisch-doomig, wobei die Franzosen zwar recht gewöhnlich tönen, aber ihr melodisches, mit teils französischen, teils englischen Gesängen versehenes Material feingeistig und klischeefrei darbieten. “A State Of Decay” von den dänischen Post-Hardcorelern WHELM klingt abwechslungsreich und intensiv, niedergeschlagen und subtil aggressiv, so dass man denken könnte, NEUROSIS hätten sich zu viel Funeral Doom reinzezogen. Nach diesem zehnminütigen Ungetüm geht die Reise wieder nach Frankreich, wo REMEMBERANCE einen ultralangsamen, depressiven, mit einer endlosen Melodie geschmückten Doom/Death-Song feilbieten, der mit schaurig gehauchten Vocals und wunderschönen Pianoklängen für Gänsehaut sorgt. Spannungskaskade par Excellence.
Die Niederländer MARY BELL nenen ihren Stil “Hateful Sludge”, und ihre “Armageddon Jam” klingt demnach auch wie eine melancholische EYEHATEGOD-Ausgabe. Dissonant, mit wavigen Gitarren und Pesthauch-Vocals, zermürben die “Depressive Dark Metaller” ASOFY aus Italien mit “Luce” die Seele des Hörers, und mit den Israelis THE KNELL ist anschließend eher klassischer Doom/Death angesagt, so bietet “Into Shattered” eher wenig Überraschendes, weiß aber mit Intensität und Atmosphäre zu fesseln. Stilistisch ähnlich gelagert, aber weitaus melodischer, mit genial zerbrechlichen Vocals (die wahrlich so klingen, als würde der Sänger im Studio heulend mit Rasierklinge an der Pulsader seinen Abschied kundgeben), beeindrucken die Chilenen MAR DE GRISES mit ihrem gleichnamigen Beitrag. SATURNUS werden zwar als Doom Metal angepriesen, doch “Murky Waters”, der Track der Dänen, transportert gleichermaßen auch den Spirit früher PARADISE LOST oder gar melodischer SEPTIC FLESH. Sehr noisig und sludgy wird’s bei den Iren WRECK OF HESPERUS, die zudem noch ziemlich sperrig und schwer verdaulich zu Werke gehen und mit “Utter Rot” wohl die intensivste Nervenprobe beigetragen haben. Leicht an frühe, extrem doomige BETHLEHEM erinnert die niederländische Formation ABYSMAL DARKENING, was nicht zuletzt auch an den extremen Vocals liegt. Programmatisch nennt sich der Titel, den sie präsentieren, “End It”. (by Avenger)

A l’instar de l’excellent label Firebox, Total Rust est un nouveau label spécialisé dans le doom et les styles environnants, et cette compilation est la première production du label. Au-delà de cette spécialisation louable plutôt rare, Total Rust a la spécificité d’être basé en Israël, dans la célèbre ville de Jerusalem, un hasard certes mais très symbolique pour le doom. Cette compilation, qui est la toute première réalisation du label, propose en fait des groupes internationaux, rassemblés ici par la lenteur et la mélancolie, et une certaine conception asymétrique des choses. Les compilations de doom sont rares, et encore plus celles qui cherchent à embrasser la totalité des variantes doom; il s’agit donc de la même démarche que la compil “Drowing Into Sorrow” réalisée par Paradise Noise Records qui est peut-être plus axée sur la lourdeur. Le premier groupe présenté est LUX INTERNA, une formation française avec un très bon morceau emotionnel de gothic doom qui rappelle The Old Dead Tree, mais en plus lent, avec une touche très mélancolique et quelques paroles en français; un des meilleurs morceaux de cette compilation pour ce groupe qui n’a sorti qu’une demo. WHELM, du Danemark, officie dans un registre tout aussi dépressif mais à la forme tout à fait différente: un post-core, lent, lourd et dépressif, qui rappelle beaucoup Neurosis. Le groupe suivant, REMEMBRANCE, est également une formation française, dont le talent n’a pas échappé à Total Rust puisque leur excellent premier album “Frail visions” est l’une de leurs premières productions. “Beyond the waters” est en fait une version inédite d’un titre de leur demo “Among lost illusions”, c’est aussi une nouvelle version du premier morceau composé par le groupe; du funeral doom atmospherique de valeur comme en témoigne leur premier album. MARY BELL des pays-bas propose à nouveau une autre variante du doom, puisque défini comme “Hateful sludge”; il s’agit d’une sorte de doomcore, de doom très lent à la Cathedral des débuts, mais plus urbain et avec une voix doomcore torturée. ASOFY d’Italie propose un doom dark expérimental, avec un côté un peu à la Monumentum de 1995, avec une voix plaintive à la fois faible et époumonée, et une touche post-rock bien développée sur la fin de ce morceau inédit qui ne figure pas sur leur premier album de 2001. THE KNELL est, quant à lui, le seul groupe israëlien de cette compilation et le seul aussi qui officie dans le doom/ death classique vieille école, assez dépouillé, un peu à la November’s Doom comme en témoigne “Into shattered”, un morceau inédit. MAR DE GRISES vient de l’un de ces pays où l’on entend par beaucoup parler de metal, en loccurence le Chili, et encore moins de doom, et où, souvent, les rares formations qui existent, manquent d’identité, mais il s’agit là de doom/ death mélancholique, efficace avec ses chuchotements et sa mélodie mélancolique. Un premier album est d’ailleurs sorti chez Firebox en 2004. Quand à SATURNUS, probablement le groupe le plus connu de cette compilation, ils ne sont plus à présenter, puisque les danois ont déjà réalisé deux albums et un mini-cd depuis 1997. Leur ex-guitariste Kim Larsen s’est d’ailleurs orienté sur la voix de la dark-folk avec Of The Wand And The Moon qui lui a valu une grande reconnaissance. Après un mini-split en 1999 avec le départ de trois membres, Saturnus est de retour avec un nouveau line-up, et “Murky waters”, qui figure aussi sur le prochain album “Veronika decides to die” qui va sortir chez Firebox, témoigne que le groupe œuvre toujours dans le doom mélodique. WRECK OF HESPERUS est un groupe irlandais qui n’a rien de celtique puisque oeuvrant dans le registre d’un doom sludge lent, avec cette fameuse voix core, saturée et trafiquée sur une musique lente avec un son urbain. Avec ABYSMAL DARKENING des Pays-Bas, on retourne à un style de doom plus mélodique, mais avec un doom/dark torturé, et il est palpable que ses membres n’ont pas dû être insensibles à leurs compatriotes de Deinonychus. Au final, une compilation de doom de plus de 74 minutes, très intéressante, limitée à seulement 750 exemplaires que les doomers doivent prioritairement acquérir. Un véritable baptême pour TOTAL RUST, qui laisse ainsi présager de bien bonnes choses encore dans le domaine du doom. (by Adnauseam)
